Astrid Medina Caturra // Tolima, Colombia

Astrid Medina’s story is one fraught with adversity and struggle, but one that is punctuated by persistence and commitment.  Born in Gaitana, Planadas, Astrid is one of 14 children who grew up in a coffee producing family.  Her Mother and one of her brothers were lost when they were swept into a river by a landslide near their home, and her father was killed by Marxist Rebels in the Colombian Civil War.  Despite this adversity, she went on to study agricultural production at Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje in Colombia, and inherited their family farm.  She then went on in 2015, to enter into the Cup of Excellence competition (representing the best lots of the nation) and took first prize.

We’ve been purchasing coffees from Astrid along with her husband, Raul, for many years now.  Her story is always one that inspires and her coffees are always deepened by the true sense of dedication, struggle, and passion that she so clearly represents.
