Nestled within the municipality of La Plata, in southern Huila, Gentil Gomez Ojeda's Finca Los Prados stands at an impressive 1920 meters above sea level.  For over 30 years, the Gomez Ojeda family has lived and breathed coffee at Los Prados, driven by a profound love for family and passion for coffee.  Though Gentil has produced coffee on his farm for decades, he sought out further mentorship through local associations for specialty coffee production in order to refine his technique to produce specialty coffee that stands out in the cup.

This caturra variety coffee, which we first tasted on the tables at the Copa De Oro competition held locally in Huila, stood out to us as the only such variety amongst a competition filled with more rare and unique varieties.  The quality of this coffee underscores the fact that excellence in coffee production transcends varietal novelty, and speaks highly of Gentil’s careful approach to his coffees.  This lot was fermented in cherry for 24 hours, followed by a 36 hour fermentation post depulping, and finally dried slowly on raised beds for 20-22 days.

    COPA DE ORO

Every year, our exporting partner in Colombia, Osito Coffee, hosts the 'Copa Suaceña', a regional producer competition based in Southern Colombia.  This event is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work of the producers in the area.  Participation in the competition assures producers that their coffee will be purchased, with the top-scoring lots receiving higher premiums

Building on the success of these competitions, Osito formed other regional competitions, culminating in the creation of the "Copa De Oro" -- where the winners of the smaller regional competitions in Huila could compete against one another, with a final grand prize winner could be announced.

We had the privilege of serving on the judging panel in Colombia for the latest iteration of the Copa De Oro, and it's with great excitement that we get to share some of the most remarkable lots we discovered during the competition.
