Finca Tamana, owned by Elías Roa Parra and his family, spans 57 hectares in the mountains of El Pital, Huila. Acquired in 2011, the farm faced challenges with degraded soil and insufficient infrastructure. Through Elías’ vision and meticulous reinvestment, it transformed into a model of innovation and quality. His focus on precise cherry selection, improved processing, and slow drying under shade ensures consistency and exceptional quality.

We’ve crossed paths with Elías a few times in the past, and recently had the opportunity to visit his farm and to see the production there.  Through our time visiting Finca Tamana, it’s clear the passion that Elías and his family have for coffee, and the opportunity to connect with the community globally is not lost on them.  When they retire, their goal is to travel the world and visit every roastery who has ever purchased their coffee.

Freshly harvested cherries are left to rest intact overnight before being de-pulped in the morning.  Fermentation is carried out for 24 hours in clean stainless steel tanks, and pulped via ecopulper.  Drying is done slowly, under shade in parabolic dryers and beds covered with netting, over 20 to 30 days.

Caturron is a relatively recent cultivar.  Though its origin is largely unknown, according to local accounts, the variety may have originated on an experimental research farm near Acevedo. When the farm was eventually shuttered, the coffee trees were left to grow untended. Over time, several distinct and unclassified cultivars began to spread informally across the region. Caturron is one of these—the product of natural selection, and community propagation.

Preliminary DNA analysis suggests that Caturron is likely a cross between Timor and Caturra.  It shows high yield potential, resistance to coffee leaf rust, and large, oblong seeds—making it particularly attractive to producers seeking both resilience and productivity.
