Ninga • Washed // Kayanza, Burundi
Ninga Hill is a remote coffee-growing community on the border between Kayanza and Muramvya. Years of conflict forced displacement for families living here, which left farms untended. With the community’s return and partnership with our importing partners here at Long Miles, the trees and soil are experiencing strong resurgence. In 2019, Long Miles established a washing station here to bring further access to producers here.
The cherries are floated and hand-sorted for ripeness, before being pulped and fermented for about 12 hours. The coffee is then rinsed with fresh water and left to soak for another 4-6 hours before being again hand-sorted and laid to dry on raised beds for 16-20 days.
Sustainability efforts in Ninga are guided by dedicated coffee scouts like Sakubu, who train farmers in shade-growing techniques, soil health, and optimal cherry selection. This commitment ensures Ninga coffee continues to deliver vibrant, layered flavors each season.
